# Direct Mail ROI Calculator

At what response rate does a mail drop pay for itself, and what return does it make?

Free interactive calculator at https://plato.ai/tools/direct-mail-roi/ (runs in the browser).

## How it works

Every mail piece carries a physical and financial cost, so a drop only pays when enough households respond and fund. This calculator takes the pieces mailed, the all-in cost per piece, the response rate, the share of responders who fund and the value of a funded loan, and returns the drop's profit, ROI, cost per funded loan and break-even response rate. Use it to check whether a list, segment or timing change clears the bar before you print.

Total cost is pieces mailed times the all-in cost per piece (print, postage and data). Funded loans are pieces times the response rate times the share of responders who fund, and revenue is funded loans times the value per funded loan. Profit is revenue minus cost, and ROI is profit divided by cost. Profit is zero when each piece earns exactly its cost, so the break-even response rate is the cost per piece divided by the value of a responder; it does not depend on how many pieces you mail. Enter margin per funded loan to get net profit, or revenue to get a gross return. Every response is counted as caused by the mail.

`Cost = pieces × cost per piece; funded loans = pieces × response rate × fund rate; profit = funded loans × value per loan − cost; ROI = profit ÷ cost; break-even response rate = cost per piece ÷ (fund rate × value per loan)`

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I calculate the break-even response rate for direct mail?
Divide the all-in cost per piece by what one responder is worth, which is the share of responders who fund times the value of a funded loan. In the default example, $0.75 ÷ (30% × $1,500) gives about 0.17%. Any response rate above that makes money on this drop.

### Should I enter revenue or margin per funded loan?
Margin, if you want profit and ROI to mean money you keep after funding and servicing costs. Revenue gives a gross return that overstates profit. Label the result accordingly when you share it.

### Does the calculator measure incremental response?
No. It treats every response as caused by the mail, but some households would have applied anyway. Keep a randomized holdout group that is not mailed and compare response and funded loans; the difference is the incremental lift you are paying for.

### How do I use this to decide who to mail?
Apply the break-even rate to each segment's predicted response. A response or lookalike model scores every household, and you mail down the score list only as far as expected value exceeds cost. The default inputs are an illustrative example, not a benchmark.
